Body Play is a term that was coined by Fakir Musafar (pictured left and in gallery below). Fakir was an incredible human being, who, at a time when it was completely taboo, started experimenting with sensations and feelings in a ritual and spiritual context in a variety of ways. Eventually Fakir started The Fakir Intensives piercing and branding school in San Francisco. Both Fakir and his wife Cléo Dubois were a huge part of the foundation of Edgewalkers.
August 10th was Fakir’s birthday. Though he is gone from this plane, his and Cléo’s work form a huge core of what Edgewalkers is, and so in 2019 it was decided that every year on August 10th, we would celebrate Body Play Day. To celebrate Body Play Day is to take a moment on this day to do something that you feel, wherever in the world you may be. Anything goes and there are no limitations. Get pierced, do a hook pull, meditate on a bed of nails, wear a corset, just push yourself to feel something. As Fakir once said, "you have nerve endings for reason, do something that makes you feel”!
Body Play Day is a day to intentionally remember those who blazed this trail for us and a day to recognize anyone from our family who is no longer here.
What is remembered lives.
There is also a wonderful Facebook page dedicated to the legacy of Fakir Musafar, and you can find some of his photos as well as copies of his Body Play magazine at the official eBay store.
